Public comment period open on air quality permit for SGL Carbon in Morganton

SGL Carbon in Morganton has applied for an air quality permit from the North Carolina Division of Air Quality and people will have a chance to comment and/or request a public hearing on the application.

The comment period started Wednesday and runs until June 26, according to information from the division.

The company applied for an Air Quality Title V Operation Permit, which the division says meets the requirements specified in 15A North Carolina Administrative Code 2Q.0500.

SGL Carbon LLC is located at 307 Jamestown Road, Morganton. Its application ID is: 1200028.25A, Permit No.: 03287T42.

Anyone requesting a public hearing must do so in writing and include a statement supporting the need for a hearing, an indication of your interest in the facility and a brief summary of the information intended to be offered at a hearing, according to the division.

Written comments on the company's application or requests for a public hearing should be postmarked no later than June 26 and addressed to Luke Mayer, Division of Air Quality, 1641 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, North Carolina 27699-1641.

Written comments also can be submitted during the public comment period via email at daq.publiccomments@deq.nc.gov, with the subject line "SGLCarbon.25A," according to the division.

The Division of Air Quality said all comments received prior to June 26 will be considered in the final determinations regarding the permit. A public hearing may be held if the director of the division determines that significant public interest exists or that the public interest will be served, the division said.

People interested can obtain additional information, including copies of the permit, application, all other relevant supporting materials and all other materials available to DAQ that are relevant to the permit decision by writing to Luke Mayer at the address above or calling him at 919-707-8042.
