A priceless video of a senior dog swimming for the first time is taking social media by storm, and it's the perfect reminder that old dogs absolutely can learn new tricks. Belle may be a 14-year-old dog, but she's still a pup at heart!

UK dog pool @caninedipanddivemaldon shared the video of Belle hopping in the water all by herself, and her confidence couldn't be cuter. Swimming can be great exercise for senior dogs, and it's easy on aging joints! There are many reasons to offer senior dogs a chance to dog paddle, and Belle's first swim is the perfect proof.

Look at her go! This brave little dog stepped off the ramp with all the confidence in the world, and that attitude carried her through her whole swim. Even when she got out of the water, she shook it off and carried on like the pro she already is.

"The little tail propelling her through the water like a little torpedo," viewer @tunamoos commented. "She did so well." Didn't she? Even though she'd never swum before, she took to doggy-paddling like she'd been doing it all her life.

Many viewers fell head-over-heels for Belle, but some couldn't get enough of the lifeguard who helped her navigate the pool. @Dierdreboylexo asked, "How does one apply to become a doggie lifeguard, please?" though the jury is still out regarding the answer.

The way the lifeguard gently supported the swimming dog's head as she got used to the water made me smile from ear to ear, but I think this is the perfect situation for a canine lifejacket or safety-tested flotation device. Not only would Belle look adorable in a life jacket, but she'd be much safer in case of exhaustion, too!

Do Dogs Like to Swim?

Swimming can be wonderful exercise for senior dogs, but not all dogs like to swim. So how can a pet parent tell if their pup truly enjoys getting in the water?

Their behavior in the water may not be as easy to read as it is on land, but in general, calm, relaxed body language is a great indicator of a happy dog. On the other hand, erratic splashing, wide eyes, and uncoordinated movements can be a sign that a dog is panicking in the water.

Canine pools like @caninedipanddivemaldon can give dogs like Belle a chance to try swimming in a small, supportive environment. If you think your pup might like swimming, try serarching for a dog pool in your neck of the woods!
