Connor Sweeney Thrifted a $25 Wood Veneer Cabinet and Upgraded It With Blue Paint

"Found this cabinet at Goodwill for just $25 and immediately saw the potential hiding underneath the dated finish," Connor Sweeney wrote in the caption of his video. After taking the cabinet home, he removed the drawers and door fronts, at which point he realized the piece wasn't made of solid wood, but just had a wood veneer. So rather than refinishing and staining the wood, he decided to paint it.

He filled in damaged areas with plaster and then used an electric sander to scuff the wood veneer. Then, he sprayed on an oil-based primer, noting that using a spray primer makes it easy to evenly apply multiple layers.

Once it dried, he sanded the primer down with his electric sander. Then, he painted the cabinet, drawers door fronts in a lovely pastel blue shade called Courtyard Blue by Behr. Next, he painted a faux woodgrain to the top and base of the piece, and then topped everything off with a polycrylic finish.

Finally, he spray painted the old dark hardware with gold gilding wax, and then reinstalled each of the handles - and his project was complete.

Proof that you don't need solid wood to create something worth stopping for Found this cabinet at Goodwill for just $25 and immediately saw the potential hiding underneath the dated finish. A little paint, a little creativity, and a lot of trust in the process later… this piece looks like something you'd find in a boutique home store instead of a thrift aisle The color is Courtyard Blue by @BEHR® Paint , and honestly, I don't think it gets enough attention. It's rich, timeless, and somehow works with just about any style. To break up all the blue, I added a faux wood finish to the top and base for some warmth and contrast. That detail completely changed the look and made the piece feel much more custom. The final touch was updating the hardware with gold gilding wax, which instantly elevated the whole cabinet without spending much money. Best part? My $25 thrift store find sold for nearly $300 shortly after I finished it Would you have painted this piece or kept the original finish?
