Orchids are not only hard to care for but also incredibly expensive. A typical grocery store orchid will cost you anywhere from $20 to $50, depending on the size. And an actual plant store orchid will cost you well into the hundred-dollar range.

But good news for orchid lovers who don't want to risk tons of money on something you may not be able to keep alive: Aldi will be stocking five-inch versions of the flowering plants for only $10, starting June 24.

While specifics on plant colors or the pots they come in aren't clarified on their website, the above picture features a signature pinkish-white orchid in a bluish-green pot.

It also isn't clear whether there will be more than one color option available, whether options will vary by store, or which specific orchid species will be sold. (It's likely the Phalaenopsis or moth orchid). Regardless, the pictured orchid is perfect for anyone looking for a less bold plant with just a little color.

Keeping an Orchid Alive

Keeping an orchid alive isn't technically hard; however, they can be finicky if not given the proper amount of water, sunlight and overall care.

A shortened version of orchid care essentials includes:

  • Water only when the soil is dry (roughly once a week), and the roots turn a silvery white.
  • Ensure the plant gets proper humidity by placing a plate of wet gravel beneath it or, if possible, a humidifier nearby.
  • Keep your home around 60–80°F.
  • Place the orchid near a window for at least four hours a day, or somewhere where it can receive a medium amount of light to grow.
  • Repot in orchid-specific soil and use fertilizer for orchids, specifically.

While it may seem intimidating, orchids thrive when given their preferred growing conditions. And remember, don't freak out if your orchid loses its flowers and turns into a stick. As long as the roots look healthy and the stem and leaves are green, the plant is still alive and will bloom again with its next cycle.

Even if you aren't sure how well you can care for an orchid, or whether it will thrive in your home's environment, the $10 price tag definitely makes it tempting to try.
