Cooking, gardening in Union County

The Union County Heritage Festival April 11-12 will feature two days of gardening and cooking demonstrations, including tomato canning with Sally McNeil and cooking with Matthew Sganga of Stone Table (2 p.m. April 11) and Paul Verica of Heritage Food and Drink (2 p.m. April 12). Charlotte will turn up on Food Network next month

Charlotte will be the focus on two episodes of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” hosted by Guy Fieri in May. On May 1, “Racing Through Charlotte” features NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer and racing-themed stops. On May 22, “Indulgent Dishes” includes a couple of stops in Charlotte. Both are at 10 p.m. on the Food Network.

Get the goodness quicker from kale, collards and herbs

LooseLeaf, a new gadget from Chef’n, makes fast work of stripping leaves from stalks, like kale and collards. The leaf-shaped stripper has holes for threading through large stems. It also has very small holes for stripping herbs like cilantro and thyme. It’s $7.95 at Sur La Table.
