Brian LoRusso got the idea when he went to pick a tag from the angel tree at the McCrory YMCA on Beatties Ford Road.

There was the tree, covered with tags for kids who need Christmas gifts. There was LoRusso, bar manager at Dogwood Southern Table + Bar, with lots of very talented bartenders. And there was the Gin Mill, 1423 S. Tryon St., co-owned by LoRusso’s brother, sitting empty one night during December. for the company Christmas party.

“I thought it would be cool to take the tags off the tree.” All the tags, he thought. So LoRusso texted his friends and an unusual pop-up bar event is the result.

On Dec. 10, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., LoRusso and his friends — Stefan Huebner of Dot Dot Dot, Colleen Hughes of Haberdish, Kel Minton of Soul Gastrolounge, Amanda Britton of Bardo and cocktail consultant Bob Peters of . . . well, everywhere, will be behind the bar at the Gin Mill for one night, each one making a drink.

The cover charge is $20 and the drinks will sell for $10. Everything they raise will go to the McCrory YMCA angel tree. There may be food, too.
