Award sends JWU instructor to Hawaii

Kelly Patkus, a chef-instructor at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, will be headed to Hawaii, thanks to Les Dames d’Escoffier International. Patkus is one of six professional women chosen for Les Dames’ Legacy Awards, which arrange mentoring opportunities. She’ll get to spend a week with Lesley Hill, CEO of Wailea Agriculture Group, the largest American grower of hearts of palm and other tropical fruit.

Patkus is working on her master’s degree in sustainable food systems through Green Mountain College in Vermont, and she’s the faculty adviser for the campus’ student-run garden. Les Dames is an international organization for women in food, beverage and hospitality.

Looking for beer? You’ll need a map

Remember Amanda Fisher and Paul Bright? They’re the Charlotte partners behind The Great NC BBQ Map, a printed guide to exploring N.C. barbecue. Now they’re following that up with The Great NC Beer Map, including basic information and details on more than 160 craft breweries across the state. They’re more than halfway through a Kickstarter campaign that ends July 24, and they hope to have it for sale by August. Get details at www.ediamaps.com.

A better sip of pineapple juice

If you get tired of the tinny taste of canned pineapple juice, Del Monte has a better option. Pure Earth comes in four flavors – pineapple, pineapple lime, pineapple banana coconut and pineapple blueberry blackberry. They come in 12- and 32-ounce plastic bottles, and they’re not made from concentrate, have no added sugar and no preservatives. Suggested retail price: $2.49-$2.69 for 12 ounces and $4.99-$5.49 for 32 ounces.
