A Charlotte Mexican restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including the presence of insects and improper food storage.

▪ Taqueria Gaviota Latina, 3112 The Plaza, received a score of 82.5 during its Oct. 6 inspection.

Health department inspectors cited the restaurant after finding “dead crawling critters” behind the dish storage and near the bathroom area, documents show.

Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:

  • Corn, shredded beef and carne asada stored above required temperatures

  • Chicken stored in plastic grocery bags in freezer

  • Food and grease buildup on stove

  • Buildup and rust on floor and wall vents

This is the restaurant’s third consecutive “B” grade.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70 percent.

The Charlotte Observer contacted the restaurant for comment regarding its score prior to publication.
