Bugs + moldy food earns Charlotte restaurant a ‘B’ grade: Sanitation scores (Aug. 30)
An uptown Charlotte restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including the presence of insects and microbial growth on food.
▪ Ten58 Sports Bar & Lounge, 430 W. 4th St., received a score of 87.5% during its Aug. 20 inspection.
Health department inspectors dinged the restaurant after finding “some flies in the kitchen,” county documents show.
Violations the restaurant was cited for include:
Peppers and greens with microbial growth
Raw mahi stored over ready-to-eat items
Cooked chicken stored below required temperature
Ranch dressing stored above required temperature
Coolers with build-up
This is the restaurant’s first “B” grade.
Mecklenburg County sanitation scores
The Mecklenburg County sanitation grades database shows that 28 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 19-30.
▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
▪ Six other restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
The Club CLT (5501 Josh Birmingham Pkwy.) received a score of 86% during an inspection on Aug 22.
The restaurant was in violation of 14 standards, including fruit flies in the back storage area, perishable foods stored above required temperatures and two broken coolers on the buffet line.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection
The restaurant previously scored 98.5% in February 2024.
Go Go Empanadas (11229 E. Independence Blvd.) received a score of 89.5% during an inspection on Aug 22.
The restaurant was in violation of nine standards, including beans stored below required temperatures and perishable foods without expiration date labels.
Seven of the nine violations were corrected during the inspection
The restaurant previously scored 92.5% in May 2024.
Mar Y Tierra Restaurant (4426 S. Tryon St.) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Aug 27.
The restaurant was in violation of 19 standards, including squeeze bottles with no labels and cooked fried chicken and ground beef stored below required temperatures.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 97% in June 2024.
Mr. Tokyo (10412 E. Independence Blvd.) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Aug 21.
The restaurant was in violation of 19 standards, including heavy residue on scoops used for dry goods and an employee rinsing a hard boiled egg in a handwashing sink.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 94.5% in June 2024.
Sal’s Pizza Factory (3723 Monroe Rd.) received a score of 84.5% during an inspection on Aug 21.
The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards, including a broken prep cooler, onions stored on the floor and raw shell eggs stored above diced tomatoes.

Big View Diner (16637 Lancaster Hwy.) received a score of 82.5% during an inspection on Aug 29.
The restaurant was in violation of 18 standards, including employees working on prep line without head coverings and a can opener blade soiled with black buildup.

The restaurant previously scored 93% in June 2024.
▪ No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.
▪ No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
