Bugs in the kitchen & food debris in a Charlotte restaurant’s cooler: Scores (Nov. 22)
A south Charlotte restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including the presence of insects and dirty food storage facilities.
▪ Irie Nation Restaurant (3501 S. Tryon St. in Charlotte) received a score of 84.5% during its Monday, Nov. 18 inspection.
The restaurant was cited after inspectors found flies and gnats in the kitchen area. Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:
Gasket in need of repair in reach-in cooler
Food debris on shelving in walk in cooler and floors of reach in freezer
Cooked chicken wings, cooked goat, rice, beans and pasta without date labels
Hot water faucet on handwashing sink not working
This is the restaurant’s second “B” grade. The first one was four days prior to the Nov. 18 inspection.
Mecklenburg County sanitation scores
The Mecklenburg County sanitation grades database shows that at least 164 restaurant inspections were completed Nov. 15-21.
▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
▪ Two restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
▪ 7th Street NY Deli (401 Hawthorne Ln. in Charlotte) received a score of 83% during an inspection on Monday, Nov. 18.
The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards, including dirty dishes and food stored on the floor.
Most violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 90% in September 2024.
The restaurant received a score of 96% during an inspection on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70%.
