Charlotte restaurant earns 3rd straight ‘B’ grade: Health sanitation scores (3/21)

A west Charlotte restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including dirty dishes and food stored on the floor.

▪ Shane’s Rib Shack (5220 New Fashion Way) in Charlotte received a score of 85% during an inspection on Tuesday, March 18.

Inspectors cited the restaurant after finding that “the majority of dishes stored as clean” were “contaminated with sticker residue, food debris, and a layer of grease,” county documents show.

According to the inspection report, the restaurant has been cited for this violation in its past three inspections.

Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:

  • Employee preparing orders without washing hands

  • Dented can of peaches stored on can rack

  • Sour cream in cold holding above required temperature

  • Cook line chef not wearing a beard guard

  • Multiple cases of single service items stored on the floor

  • Food debris on food contact surfaces

This is the restaurant’s third consecutive “B” grade. The previous two were in December and October.

Mecklenburg County sanitation scores

The Mecklenburg County sanitation grades database shows that at least 139 restaurant inspections were completed March 14-20.

▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

▪ Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

▪ Queen City Grounds (644 N. Church St.) received a score of 88.5% during an inspection on Thursday, March 20.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards, including unwashed fruit and food stored on the floor.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 93% in December 2024.

▪ Desi District Restaurant (11812 Carolina Place Pkwy.) received a score of 88% during an inspection on Tuesday, March 18.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards, including unlabeled spices and dishes stacked wet.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 90% in November 2024.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The News & Observer previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70%.
