Tarwater talk
Michael Tarwater, CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System, will be the guest speaker for the World Affairs Council of Charlotte at noon Oct. 8 at the Westin Charlotte, 601 S. College St. He’ll talk about the International Medical Outreach program sponsored by Carolinas HealthCare in collaboration with the Heineman Foundation of Charlotte. The program has provided equipment and training to support sustainable health care initiatives in Central America, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.

Surviving suicide attempt
Kevin Hines, author of “Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt,” will speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 as part of the Davidson Lifeline Speaker Series in the Lilly Family Gallery of Davidson College.
Hines’ book describes how he attempted to end his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge at age 19. He is one of only 34 to survive the fall. Hines has appeared on 20/20, Larry King Live, CBS News and Good Morning America.

Hines will also appear at a free public event from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11 during Sunday Night Music at Summit Coffee in Davidson, and at a book signing from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Main Street Books in Davidson.

‘Sex and Sensibility’
Doctors from Novant Health Mintview OB/GYN will host the fourth installment of “Sex And Sensibility: What’s Up With My Libido?” at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at The Visulite Theatre, 1615 Elizabeth Ave.
Dr. Alyse Kelly-Jones specializes in working with women who are dealing with sexual dysfunction, especially low libido and painful sex. She was one of two Charlotte-area doctors who testified before the federal Food And Drug Administration to support approval of Addyi (flibanserin), the first prescription drug to treat hypoactive sexual disorder in women. At the October event, she will talk about making intimacy a priority in a relationship and how to make sex more pleasurable for both partners.

Spinal research fundraiser
To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates is hosting the first Back On Track 5K Run/Walk Oct. 10 to raise money and awareness for spinal research. The course will begin at the doctors’ office on Baldwin Avenue and continue through Myers Park and Dilworth neighborhoods. Proceeds will go to The Spinal Research Foundation.
