Veterans town hall
The Salisbury Veterans Affairs Medical Center will host a veterans town hall meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The event is on the fifth floor of Corporate Center II, 2359 Perimeter Pointe Parkway, across from the Charlotte Veterans Affairs Health Care Center under construction on West Tyvola Road.
Representatives from both the Salisbury hospital and the new Charlotte health center will provide updates on the construction progress. Veterans can also apply for enrollment by bringing their military discharge paperwork (DD-214). Staff will be available to assist in determining eligibility, filling out forms and scheduling appointments. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Parking is free. For information: www.salisbury.va.gov.

Mental health event
PhotoVOICE and Portraits in Recovery, two exhibits sponsored by Mental Health America of Central Carolinas, will be open to the public from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at Amelie’s French Bakery & Cafe, 2424 N. Davidson St.
About 35 pieces of art – including portraits, photographs and videos – have been produced by Charlotte-area youths. After Friday, some of the works will be displayed at the Charlotte Arts League, 1517 Camden Road.

Dealing with grief
The Charlotte Chapter of the Compassionate Friends will hold its annual candle lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway.
The event coincides with a Worldwide Candle Lighting, organized 17 years ago as a gift to the bereavement community from the Compassionate Friends. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world honor the memory of beloved children who have died from any cause and at any age.
