Greenery class

Join Historic Rosedale Plantation’s garden curator to learn about the many types of holiday greenery and make a creation to take home. The workshop is 10 a.m.-noon Dec. 16 at the Historic Rosedale Plantation, 3427 N. Tryon St. Bring a pair of hand pruners. Cost is $25. To register: 704-335-0325.

Cooking demonstration

“Holiday Music with Julie Harris and the Myers Park Consort” will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 19 at President James K. Polk State Historic Site, 12031 Lancaster Highway, Pineville. A variety of instruments will be featured, including the dulcimer, bouzouki, guitar and folk harp. Free.

Author talk

Meet Dr. James Macomson, author of “Christmas Renaissance: Stories of Grace, Belief, and Spirit,” 2-3 p.m. Dec. 20 at the University City Regional Library’s Community Room, 301 East W.T. Harris Blvd. The author will talk about his writing process, inspiration and career path. Q&A will follow. Copies of his latest book will be available for sale. Free.

Survival skills

“Wilderness Survival Skills 101” will be offered 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 22 at McDowell Nature Center, 15222 York Road. Join the outdoor recreation specialist and learn techniques and tips on how to survive in the wild through discussion and hands-on activities. The class is free, but registration is required.
