New CEO for HopeWay mental health center returns to previous job

After only a month on the job, Daniel Brown has left his position as the first chief executive officer for the proposed HopeWay residential center for adults with behavioral health problems.

Brown returned this week to his position as chief operating officer for behavioral health at Monarch, where he had worked for 11 years. Monarch is an Albemarle-based nonprofit that provides support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness and substance abuse across the state.

In Friday’s announcement, Brown said the decision was difficult, but he made it “due to family considerations.”

HopeWay is renovating buildings on a 12-acre campus in south Charlotte that will provide residential and day treatment for adults with mental illness. It will have rooms for 36 residential clients and space for 50 additional day clients. Scheduled to open in summer 2016, it will have a staff of three psychiatrists and 20 therapists.

William Blue, co-founder and chairman of HopeWay Foundation, said he regrets but respects Brown’s decision, and the board will resume the search for a leader for the new campus.
