Vanishing holiday

“The Vanishing Holiday: Twelfth Night – Origins & American Traditions,” 11 a.m.-noon Jan. 16 at President James K. Polk State Historic Site at 12031 Lancaster Highway in Pineville. Ron Vinson, executive director of the Presbyterian Heritage Center in Montreat will discuss the origin and prominence of Twelfth Night. Free.

Community celebration

Honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 17 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Levine Museum of the New South, 200 E. Seventh St. Join this community celebration with two days of honoring the pursuit of civil and human rights through film, performances, children’s crafts, civil rights stories, presentations and exhibits. Jazz program

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library presents “Jazz: The American Journey,” 1-2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Beatties Ford Road Regional Library’s Community Room B, 2412 Beatties Ford Road. Enjoy a 60-minute theatrical narrative and interactive program. Free.

Latin concert

Enjoy a Latin music concert 7-8:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Mint Museum Uptown, 500 South Tryon St. This event will showcase different rhythms from Latin America, highlighting the talents of local musicians from the Latin American community. Orchid show

Orchid show and sale, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 23 and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 24. See orchid exhibits from local orchid societies and master growers. Enjoy orchid art displays and lectures for novice growers. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, 6500 S. New Hope Road in Belmont. Free with garden admission. 704-825-4490.

Tax help

Free income tax preparation is being offered 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Main Library’s Dowd Foundation Learning Studio, 310 North Tryon St. Details: 704-416-0100.
