Elevation Church is growing again, this time into a permanent site in the University City Area.

Starting March 21, the Charlotte megachurch – one of the fastest growing in America – will begin holding worship services in a 38,000-square foot facility at Innovation Park that will seat 1,200 people.

The church will have spent about $4.9 million to turn the building into worship space, said Elevation CFO Chunks Corbett.

Since 2011, Elevation has been renting the gym at the University City YMCA for weekend services that is now drawing more than 1,500 people.

The new site will be more than double the capacity of the gym.

With the opening, Elevation will have four permanent sites – at Blakeney, Matthews, Lake Norman and University City.

In addition, the church holds services in rented spaces in uptown Charlotte, Providence High School, Concord, Gastonia, Weddington, Rock Hill, Raleigh, Roanoke, Va., and Greater Toronto, Canada.

Most weekends, Pastor Steven Furtick preaches live at Elevation’s Blakeney site. It is simulcast at the various campuses, though each one has its own staff and band.
