Several events in and around Charlotte are planned Thursday to mark the 64th annual National Day of Prayer.

Congress designated the day in 1952 as a time when Americans are asked “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.”

It’s become a day mostly observed by evangelical Christians.

The theme this year is “Lord, Hear Our Cry,” adapted from a passage of the first Book of Kings in the Bible.

Several members of Congress and others will speak at a prayer event, 9 a.m.-noon, in Washington. Watch live on GOD TV; DirectTV channel 365; and nationaldayofprayer.org.
