Jade Buddha statue coming to Charlotte
The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace – an 11.4-foot-high statue weighing eight tons – will be on display at Minh Dang Quang monastery in Charlotte for nine days, beginning Saturday.
The Buddhist monastery, at 4310 W. Sugar Creek Road, is expecting up to 10,000 visitors from all over the Southeast to see and mediate before the traveling statue carved from a jade boulder discovered in Canada.
The opening ceremony, including a collective bowing ritual and music, will be at 5 p.m. Saturday. The statue will also be on public display, 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., through May 17. Details: 980-422-5136. Tim Funk
