National conference aimed at helping black churches’ health ministries is meeting in Charlotte

A three-day conference designed to help African-American churches strengthen their health ministries, community kitchens, faith-based clinics and health fairs began Wednesday in Charlotte.

Sponsored by The Balm in Gilead, the “Healthy Churches 2020” national conference will continue through Friday afternoon at the Hilton Charlotte University Place, 8629 JM Keynes Drive.

Sessions will cover a multitude of subjects, including fitness, diabetes, mental illness, CPR training, nutrition, preparation for emergencies, the Affordable Care Act and the Let’s Move White House initiative.

Speakers will include Dr. Charlotte Yeh, chief medical officer for AARP; former NBA player Jonathan Bender; and the Rev. James Forbes, pastor emeritus of The Riverside Church in New York.
