Charlotte church hosting Thursday panel on U.S. government torture
Myers Park Baptist Church will host an interfaith panel Thursday night (April 14) to discuss torture by the U.S. government, North Carolina’s involvement and efforts by the faith community and others to demand more accountability.
The free event will begin at 7 p.m. at the church, 1900 Queens Road.
Speakers will include Dr. Azizah Al-Hibri of the Task Force on Detainee Treatment; Rabbi Rachel Kahn-Troster of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture; Dr. Christina Cowger of the North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture; and the Rev. Ben Boswell, senior minister at Myers Park Baptist and an Army National Guard veteran.
The discussion – titled “Repairing the Brokenness: A Faithful Response to North Carolina’s Involvement in Torture” – comes at a time when torture has become an issue in the 2016 presidential campaign. Tim Funk
