The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) has named Steven Furtick, pastor of Charlotte's fast-growing Elevation Church, to its “SuperSoul 100,” which the TV network described as “a collection of 100 awakened leaders who are using their voices and talent to elevate humanity.”
Winfrey hosts a Sunday morning interview show on OWN called “SuperSoul Sunday.”
The “SuperSoul 100” list includes a host of nationally known authors, preachers, thinkers and performers. A sampling: Bishop T.D. Jakes, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, Tony Robbins, Rob Bell, Common, Arianna Huffington, Maria Shriver, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway musical sensation, “Hamilton.”
The list is divided into categories. Furtick is among the “Soul Teachers – your guides to the highest vision of your life.”
The SuperSoul web site includes a picture of Furtick and an account of how he and wife Holly and seven other families left Shelby, moved to Charlotte and started Elevation Church in 2006. Since then, the site noted, weekly attendance at the Southern Baptist church’s various locations has grown to 20,000.
It also includes a quote from Furtick: “We can reach for something our entire lives and never realize that we were reaching for the wrong thing. A commitment to the wrong goals will create an illusion of progress, but it won’t bring the reward of fulfillment.”
It’s unclear whether Furtick’s inclusion on the list means he will appear with Winfrey on her show.
Neither the TV network nor Elevation Church returned Observer requests for comment.
