This North Texas park is one of the best in US for camping with kids, list says
Campground review website The Dyrt, says one North Texas campsite is among the best in the country for camping with kids, according to a new ranking.
Based on camping locations catered towards hosting children, The Dyrt’s ranking says Dinosaur Valley State Park Campground in Glen Rose is both an “educational and thrilling” experience.
Dinosaur Valley State Park’s mission is to preserve archaeological dinosaur footprints. In 1909, a 9-year-old discovered large, three-toed tracks in the state park’s riverbeds. Then, fossil collector R.T Bird from the American Museum of Natural History determined that they were sauropod and theropod tracks. These tracks were some of the first evidence that indicated sauropods walked on land.
Guests who visit the park can see the 100-million-year-old dinosaur tracks, see replicas of dinosaurs and partake in educational tours. The state park is about an hour drive from Fort Worth.
Here’s why the Dyrt ranked it No. 5 in the country on its list.
Dinosaur Valley State Park Campground in Glen Rose
Dyrt ranked Dinosaur Valley State Park so high simply because “the sheer wonder of standing in an actual dinosaur footprint is something children never forget.”
There are more than 20 miles of hiking trails and clear signs towards dinosaur prints. Dinosaur Valley’s website also specifies: “It’s easy to find dinosaur tracks in the park — just head to the river!”
It wouldn’t be family-friendly if there weren’t also exciting activities for adults, too. In addition to the dinosaur-themed activities, there is mountain biking, hiking, swimming, fishing, camping and paddle-boardinng. The park also has educational horseback riding tours and horse-drawn carriage wagon rides.
Reviewers for The Dyrt report that camping costs between $18 and $70 per night. There are 70 sites available, including RV sites. Both campfires and pets are allowed.
There is still availability to book a campground space. Day passes, tickets and campground reservations can be purchased ahead of time from the Texas State Park website or through The Dyrt.
