Carnival cruise ambassador pivots away from full-time social media
As Carnival Cruise Line's beloved brand ambassador, John Heald, approaches his 40th anniversary with the cruise line, his role is set to evolve alongside the cruise line's ships and exclusive destinations.
On June 2, while sailing on board the Carnival Sunrise to celebrate the grand opening of Carnival's enhancements to Half Moon Cay, Heald and Carnival President Christine Duffy sat down for a Facebook live video discussing the evolution of both the cruise line and Heald's role.
For the last several years, the cruise director turned brand ambassador has dedicated himself to answering Carnival passengers' questions full time on his popular Facebook page that's followed by more than 670,000 cruise vacationers.
Passengers eagerly interact with Heald on the page, delighting in the classic cruise director humor he brings to social media and appreciating the exceptional amount care he puts into helping them. Working six days a week, he and his colleague, Jacinta, answer around 2,500 questions via the Facebook page every week.
Although Heald enjoys helping passengers, social media can be a difficult place. Having such an active presence on social media means that he bears the brunt of complaints, especially about unpopular changes coming soon to Carnival's loyalty program.

Social media isn't where Carnival's John Heald is happiest
Heald is ready for a change that involves less day-to-day social media engagement and more face-to-face communication.
"I really do want to be where I'm so very happy, and that isn't behind a computer. It is here with you, but with the crew and with the guests, that's the most important thing for me is that connectivity," Heald explained in the Facebook live video.
Going forward, Heald intends to spend more time interacting with passengers on board Carnival's ships rather than on Facebook.

That doesn't mean that Heald is abandoning his dedicated social media followers though.
"I will promise to do, on Mondays, a three-minute video. I promise to share all the news. I promise to share all the fun. I'm going to answer questions two, sometimes three, times a week," Heald said.
Carnival passengers can still submit questions to Heald, but not on Facebook
Rather than answer hundreds of questions daily via a dedicated Facebook post, Heald will select which questions to answer from those submitted via a dedicated email address that will go live on June 15.
"I can't promise I can answer every question, but I will choose some and try and help as many of you as I can," Heald said.

Passengers can expect Heald's Facebook content to shift to more videos from on board Carnival ships as well as behind-the-scenes looks at new projects in development at "the mothership" - Heald's term for Carnival's headquarters in Miami.
"I intend to start to be on ships more, travel more, speak with my colleagues in Miami more, and to visit you on the ships everywhere and to be on board as much as I possibly can with multiple ship visits," Heald shared.

Heald's annual fan cruise becomes President's Cruise with Duffy
Along with changing his social media presence, the brand ambassador is evolving his annual fan cruise into a President's Cruise co-hosted with Duffy. Those who sign up for the President's Cruise can expect all the usual fun, private shows, events, and gifts of Heald's fan cruises, plus Duffy's participation in the festivities.
Carnival's first President's Cruise will take place on a six-day Caribbean cruise on Carnival Magic departing from Miami on Feb. 28, 2027, calling at Celebration Key, Bahamas; Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; and Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos.
"You need to have booked the cruise by August 30th as in early September I will share how you get to be part of this extra special cruise," Heald noted in a Facebook post recapping the news.
