Cincinnati transportation firm expanding its Charlotte footprint

Total Quality Logistics Inc. is expanding its local footprint and planning to add about 40 jobs in Charlotte by the end of the year.

The plan locally is part of a companywide expansion effort, said Mark Motz, communications specialist at Cincinnati-based Total Quality Logistics, which coordinates transportation details and prices for companies moving goods across the country.

Already one of the biggest freight brokerage companies in the country, Motz said the company plans to double in size by 2017, growing to about 5,900 employees from the 3,100 it had at the end of 2014.

The company currently employs about 70 people in its Charlotte office, located just off Arrowood Road near Interstate 77.

“It’s an aggressive growth plan. There’s a lot of room to grow in this industry,” Motz said. “Charlotte is a nice fit for us. There’s a good talent pool and we’re doing what we can to grow our name down there and be a bigger part of the community.”

Most of the Charlotte jobs to be filled are freight brokers, which are sales positions, Motz said. The starting salary for the position is $35,000 with an uncapped commission once employees have completed the six-month training period, he added, giving the worker a “literally unlimited earning potential.”

By the third year, those brokers make $81,732 on average per year, and by the fourth year, they make $112,627 on average, Motz said.

“We’re not necessarily looking for specific skills, it’s more attitude that we look for,” Motz said. “We have people that come from all sorts of different backgrounds – everything from MBAs and lawyers to people with music and education backgrounds.”
