Up for rezoning in Charlotte: Apartments, apartments and townhouses
Charlotte City Council is set to hear or decide on several major new apartment projects at their rezoning meeting Monday night, another indication that the city’s building boom isn’t over.
It’ll be the last zoning meeting for nearly half the council: Next month, five newbies will step into seats being vacated by incumbents.
Here’s a quick look at what’s on Monday’s agenda:
▪ University City apartments: Developer Bainbridge Communities is seeking to build up to 315 new apartments on J.N. Pease Place, north of Ben Craig Drive and east of Mallard Creek Road. The 26-acre site is currently vacant, and would see up to 2,030 new vehicle trips per day under the proposed apartments. City Council is set to vote on the plan.
▪ Blue Line apartments: CapRock, a developer, is trying to get approval for a plan to build up to 132 age-restricted apartments for senior citizens on the Blue Line extension. The 4.6-acre site is off Eastway Drive, south of North Tryon Street and north of the Blue Line Extension, near the Old Concord station. City Council is set to vote on the plan.
▪ Townhouses near NoDa: Developer Saussy Burbank is planning to build 22 townhouses and two single-family houses on a 1.5-acre site on East 36th Street, between Spencer Street and Charles Avenue. The site is currently occupied by a single house and 15 apartment units. City Council is set to vote on the petition Monday.
