Manufacturer known for ties to philanthropic Charlotte family to close local plant
RSC Chemical Solutions is closing its manufacturing plant in Indian Trail, where 66 employees will lose their jobs as a result.
RSC Chemical Solutions is a division of Radiator Specialty Company, a company that was co-founded in Charlotte in 1924 by I.D. Blumenthal, then a traveling salesman whose name is now synonymous with a number of philanthropic efforts in Charlotte. RSC has its headquarters in Indian Trail.
RSC develops, manufactures and markets chemical products for automotive, hardware and industrial applications, including Gunk, a product that removes grease and grime from engines and other parts.
In a statement, the company said the local plant will close on June 30. RSC said it is transitioning instead to a contract manufacturing business model.
The move is intended to “improve efficiencies,” boost profitability and adapt to “shifts in our market,” the company said.
“These decisions are never easy, and it was one we did not take lightly. This is a 94-year-old company, and one that employs incredible people. We are mindful of the impact on our community, and we will be helping those affected through the transition.” said Reaiah Brown, RSC’s HR director.
