Former Harris Teeter President Fred Morganthall has been named the new senior vice president of retail divisions for Kroger, which bought Matthews-based Harris Teeter last year. Rod Antolock, currently Harris Teeter’s executive vice president, will now serve as president.
Morganthall has not yet announced where he’ll be based. Antolock will be based in Charlotte, a Kroger representative told the Observer Monday.
In a statement late last week, Cincinnati-based Kroger said Morganthall, 63, joined Harris Teeter in 1986 and that Antolock, 56, joined the company in 2000.
Mike Ellis, Kroger’s president and chief operating officer, in the statement praised Morganthall as an “exceptional leader who is respected throughout the industry,” and said Antolock has been “instrumental in developing Harris Teeter’s exceptional customer service and product quality.”
Harris Teeter is the No. 2 grocery store in the Charlotte area by market share, right behind Walmart, according to sales-tracking firm Chain Store Guide. The Matthews-based chain has over 50 stores in the Charlotte area, where it employs about 7,000 people.
The chain operates stores in the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia.
