Health insurance giant to add several thousand jobs in Charlotte expansion, sources say

A health insurance giant is expected to add several thousands of jobs and open an office in the University area, two sources confirmed Monday.

North Carolina officials are expected to announce this week that St. Louis-based Centene Corporation is bringing thousands of jobs to Charlotte, according to the sources who are familiar with the project but are not authorized to publicly talk about it.

Centene could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

It was not immediately known how much the company would receive in state or local incentives.

The news, first reported by the Charlotte Business Journal, comes as the North Carolina Economic Investment Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss “one or more economic development proposals,” according to a release.

David Rhoades, a spokesman for the North Carolina Department of Commerce, declined to comment on Monday.

The pending announcement comes amid a surge in unemployment in recent months as the novel coronavirus has continued to devastate the economy.

Prior to the economic crisis, Charlotte saw a slew of corporate expansions in the last few years, including Microsoft and manufacturing technology giant Honeywell.

Business across the US

Centene, a publicly-traded company, is the largest Medicaid managed care organization in the country. The company, which employs just under 70,000 people, came in at No. 42 on the Fortune 500 list this year.

The corporation also provides Obamacare coverage.

It acquired competitor WellCare this year in a $17-billion deal, making it a giant among government healthcare program plans.

And as a result of the WellCare acquisition, Centene now has business in all 50 states.
