Major design engineering firm to close Charlotte office, costing 43 jobs

McDermott International, a global architectural design, engineering and construction firm, is shuttering its Charlotte office as part of a restructuring of its North American operations, company officials confirmed Thursday.

The move will displace 43 jobs, a company spokeswoman said.

The Charlotte office primarily supported McDermott’s power business, according to a company statement to the Observer.

McDermott designed and built the ‘clean-coal’ unit 6 at Duke Energy’s Rogers Energy Complex, formerly known as Cliffside Steam Station, in Cleveland and Rutherford counties.

“Unit 6 was designed to remove 99% of sulfur dioxide and 90% of mercury emissions to meet particulate emission limits,” according to McDermott.com.

The closing of McDermott’s office on East Morehead Street will occur over the rest of the year, according to the company statement. Support for the company’s power business will shift to McDermott’s Houston headquarters.

Charlotte workers may be offered employment elsewhere in the company, officials said.

McDermott employs more than 42,000 people in over 54 countries, according to its website.
