Atrium Health releases first look at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Charlotte

Atrium Health released a first look at plans for the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Charlotte Tuesday afternoon.

In Atrium’s Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, the Charlotte health care system showed a rendering of the medical school, which is still under review by the Federal Trade Commission.

Atrium, Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest University first announced plans for the medical school in April 2019.

The medical school could start off with 3,200 students across 100 specialized programs and 1,600 faculty members, Atrium CEO Gene Woods said.

“Our goal is to really be the Silicon Valley for health care, from Winston to Charlotte,” Woods said Tuesday. “And really leveraging this in new ways that will bring new discoveries in medicine for decades to come.”

And Atrium expects the medical school to have a big economic impact in Charlotte, Woods said.

Atrium consulted with Pittsburgh-based health care consulting firm Tripp Umbach on the economic impact of a medical school in Charlotte.

The firm estimated that by 2040, the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Charlotte could generate more than $2.5 billion in economic impact and more than 20,000 high-paying jobs, Woods said.

“As we build this, we’re really excited for what it means for education, for research, for health — but also for the economic development of this region,” Woods said.
