NC manufacturer details $3 million expansion plans, 90 new jobs north of Charlotte
A high-end furniture manufacturer is building a new production plant and adding 90 jobs in Catawba County, according to a news release Friday from the governor’s office.
The 140,000-square-foot facility will be based in Conover, about an hour northwest of Charlotte. Sherrill Furniture will invest $2.9 million in the facility.
“The furniture capital of the world is growing,” Gov. Roy Cooper said in the release. North Carolina companies like Sherrill Furniture “understand the advantages of doing business in our state,” he said.
It’s Sherrill Furniture’s fifth production facility, all of which are located near Hickory. The company was founded in 1945 and is managed by, Charles Sherrill, a third-generation owner.
The release didn’t provide an average wage for the new positions but said the jobs will pay above the Catawba County average of $43,920.
Thad Monroe, president of Sherrill Furniture, said the expansion will help the company reduce backlogs and fill orders more quickly.
The furniture industry has been heavily affected by post-pandemic supply chain problems.
The company will receive a $150,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund for the expansion. The fund, administered by the state department of commerce, provides financial assistance to local governments to attract economic investment and create jobs.
