Charlotte hospitals are offering signing bonuses up to $30,000. Make that $45,000 now

Less than a month ago, Novant Health was offering up to $30,000 in sign-on bonuses for some nurse anesthetist positions.

Now, that sign-on bonus has shot up to $45,000, according to Novant Health. A nurse anesthetist administers anesthesia for patients.

The Novant Health nurse anesthetist, or CRNA, position isn’t the only local hospital job with huge sign-on bonuses.

Both of Charlotte’s major hospital systems offer sign-on bonuses for multiple nursing positions within their organizations. That’s in part due to a nationwide shortage in nursing staff.

National labor shortages have gathered widespread attention throughout the COVID pandemic and in Charlotte too in a number of fields — from the restaurant industry to air travel.

And the nursing staff shortage is an issue that’s also playing out in North Carolina. In fact, by 2033, North Carolina could face an estimated shortage of close to 12,500 registered nurses, NC Nursecast predicts.

NC Nursecaset is a workforce model developed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Cecil G. Sheps Center Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy, with support from the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Hospitals are the largest employers of registered nurses in the state, according to UNC Chapel Hill. So the shortage of nursing staff is expected to hit hospitals the hardest.

At Novant, signing bonuses are used to attract talent amid nationwide shortages, according to the hospital system. Registered nurses could also see large hiring bonuses from Novant, up to $20,000, depending on the role, according to Novant Health.

Open jobs at Novant Health can be found through the hospital system’s website.

Competing for workers

There’s nothing new about signing bonuses, especially in the competitive health industry field, Atrium spokeswoman Kate Gaier told The Charlotte Observer in an email.

Atrium Health positions can be found online through the Atrium Health Careers Facebook page, including positions that offer sign-on bonuses.

“Because of the national nursing shortage, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, you will see sign-on bonuses of up to $20,000 in specific areas to help attract top talent in that field,” Gaier said.
