American Airlines drops some Charlotte airport routes, but adds one new destination
A few more changes are coming to Charlotte Douglas International Airport as airlines continue to deal with the ongoing pilot shortage.
In the latest round of changes, American Airlines will drop at least three routes from CLT, the airline confirmed to The Charlotte Observer Tuesday.
The airline will discontinue service from Charlotte to Alexandria, Louisiana, beginning Oct. 6. And American Airlines will temporarily suspend service from CLT to El Paso, Texas, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from Oct. 6 to April 3.
The airline said it was making the cuts based on customer demand.
American Airlines, the dominant carrier at CLT, said it is also adding one route to its Charlotte offerings.
American will begin offering a new seasonal service from CLT to San Jose, California, operating once daily on an Airbus A321 from Nov. 3 to April 23.
Delays continue at Charlotte airport
The changes come after a rough travel weekend for many flying into or out of Charlotte Douglas. Dozens of flights were canceled and hundreds delayed, The Charlotte Observer reported.
Weather was the main cause for the canceled and delayed flights, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
There were still some remnants of flight trouble lingering at the Charlotte Airport on Tuesday too, with 40 flights delayed at CLT and eight cancellations as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
Charlotte airport officials also have warned travelers to expect even longer lines and crowded parking lots as summer travel picks up.
Charlotte’s airport saw a dramatic drop in passengers in early 2020 as the coronavirus hit North Carolina. But officials have predicted that passenger travel will make a full recovery by next year.
The airport was one of the busiest in the world last year, ranked the fifth busiest airport worldwide for arrivals and departures, according to according to Airports Council International 2021 preliminary rankings.
