American Airlines is cutting 1,000 Charlotte flights this fall. Will yours be affected?
About 1,000 American Airlines flights out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport — one of the company’s major hub airports — have been cut from its original fall schedule, the company told The Charlotte Observer.
American made adjustments to its September and October flight schedule nationwide in late July, airline spokesman Andrew Tull said. American removed 504 flights from its September schedule and 595 from October at CLT.
The cuts lowered American’s daily average departures from the Charlotte airport to 527 in September and 548 in October.
American will fly a total of 16,338 departures from Charlotte in September and 17,003 in October. No routes were removed due to the service reduction.
Tull said the original schedule for this year was set based on previous years’ schedules.
“American’s originally published flying was based on our 2019 flying schedule — not the current demand environment,” Tull said. “Schedules are published 331 days in advance, and then adjustments are made closer based on customer demand.”
Customers whose flights were affected by service cuts will be contacted by the airline and offered an alternative. If they’re unable to move to the new flight, they can receive a full refund, Tull said.
American Airlines’ profits
Despite the service reductions, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said the second quarter of this fiscal year was the first time the company produced a profit since the COVID pandemic began.
During the company’s second quarter earnings call on July 21, Isom said the airline brought in $13.4 billion total revenue, a record for any second quarter, and $476 million in net income.
