Krispy Kreme leaves 80 jobless with production shift. Why NC doughnut maker made the move.

For what the company called “efficiency’s” sake, North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme is ending its partnership with an Iowa doughnut maker, resulting in 80 layoffs, The Hawk Eye newspaper in Burlington, Iowa, reported.

Krispy Kreme notified Black Hawk Food Services on Sept. 30 the company will end production at the Iowa plant on Oct. 28 and shift production to N.C. plants in Winston-Salem and Concord, plant manager Mark Stockwell told the newspaper.

The announcement came two-and-a-half years after the Iowa Works Development government agency said on Facebook that Black Hawk needed to hire 200 workers at its new Burlington plant to service Krispy Kreme.

In a statement to The Charlotte Observer Saturday night, Krispy Kreme said ending its “co-manufacturing relationship with Blackhawk Service Corp. ... will enhance efficiencies within our manufacturing network and help position the company for growth.”

“We are proud to share that production of Krispy Kreme’s Branded Sweet Treats line will transition to our Doughnut Factories in Winston Salem and Concord from Burlington, Iowa, at the end of October,” according to the statement.

“... We greatly appreciate their contributions and thank Blackhawk employees and the Burlington community for their support.”
