Candy prices are more trick than treat. Consumers see highest jump in decades
Despite rising inflation, Americans are still eager to celebrate Halloween.
In fact, the National Retail Foundation’s Halloween Spending Survey found that people will spend $100.45 billion on the holiday this year.
Statista, a consumer data company, also reported that Americans are willing to shell out a collective $3.1 billion on Halloween candy alone.
On average, prices for candy are currently 14% higher than last year, according to data from Datasembly, a product data platform for retailers. And data from S&P Global Market Intelligence showed that price increases are the highest they’ve been since 1999, CNN reported.
However, candy has long been a staple for Halloween celebrations around the world, so it’s no surprise that inflation is failing to stop customers from purchasing their favorite brands.
Snickers were identified as the most expensive Halloween candy with a 14% price increase at an average cost of $7 per 1-pound bag. Reese’s and Twix come in second and third with 13% increases and average costs of $7 and $6 per 1-pound bag, respectively.
The brand with the highest price increase from last year is Skittles, with a whopping 42% increase and an average cost of $4 per 1-pound bag.
