A Matthews packaging plant is closing, leaving almost 90 people without jobs

A packaging company is laying off dozens of workers with the closure of its Mecklenburg County plant.

Atlanta-based Hood Container is cutting 88 jobs at its Matthews facility, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filed recently with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The layoffs are effective Dec. 19.

Hood Container did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

Hood Container is a family-owned custom packaging company. The 11135 Monroe Road site is a design center and corrugator plant, according to the company’s website.

Founded in 2012, Hood Container is one of the top 10 paper and packaging companies in the U.S., according to the company.

Hood Container has 34 sites in 16 states across the country, the company’s website shows. With Matthews, Hood Container has seven North Carolina plants, warehouses and design centers, including Lincolnton, west of Charlotte.
