Harris Teeter closes in-store delis over Boar’s Head meats listeria scare and recall

Harris Teeter temporarily closed its in-store delis Friday after a recall of Boar’s Head meat products due to possible listeria contamination.

The Matthews-based regional grocer closed its “fresh market” delis “voluntarily out of an abundance of caution,” according to an alert on its website.

“Order Ahead functionality for deli, pizza, and subs will be unavailable during this time,” the Harris Teeter announcement said.

The delis reopened on Saturday.

What the recall involves

Virginia-based Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc. recalled its liverwurst products on Friday and additional deli meats produced on the same line and same day as the liverwurst, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

The recall involves a total of about 207,500 pounds of products, according to the USDA.

Officials said they’re investigating a multi-state outbreak of listeria infections linked to meats sliced at delis. As of July 25, 34 sick people have been identified in 13 states, including two deaths and 33 hospitalizations. One person in North Carolina was sickened, according to a federal map pf the outbreak. It does not say where in North Carolina that person was.

“The investigation is ongoing, and Food Safety and Inspection Service continues to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state partners,” according to a CDC news release on Friday.

How to know if you bought some

The 3.5-pound loaves of liverwurst came in plastic casing and various other weight packages sliced in retail delis labeled “Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA,” FDA officials said.

Products were shipped to retailers bearing sell-by dates ranging from July 25 to Aug. 30 printed on the side of the packaging.

The recalled products were available at Harris Teeter, according to the grocer.

“Upon notification of the recall by its supplier, Harris Teeter promptly removed these products from its shelves,” according to a statement on the grocer’s website. “If you purchased one or more of these items, please do not consume them. Instead, return the product(s) to your Harris Teeter for a full refund.”

Each recalled product has the establishment number “EST. 12612” in the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.

The ready-to-eat liverwurst products were produced between June 11 and July 17 and have a 44-day shelf life, FDA officials said.

Harmless to most, listeria can be deadly

The Mayo Clinic defines listeria as “a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems.”

Healthy people are rarely harmed if infected by listeria, clinic officials say.
