A new NC law allows liquor sales on Labor Day. Did Charlotte stores opt in or out?

Labor Day weekend is approaching, and if you’re looking to spend the unofficial end of summer partying, you’ll need to plan ahead for a booze run.

Generally, all ABC stores across North Carolina are closed on Sundays in addition to some holidays.

This summer, Governor Roy Cooper approved a change to the law that would allow local ABC boards to have more flexibility with their hours on certain holidays, allowing them to open on Labor Day, New Year’s Day and Independence Day.

“A local board may otherwise determine the days on which its stores shall be closed,” state law says.

Can you buy liquor on Labor Day in Charlotte?

This Labor Day, all liquor stores in Mecklenburg County will be closed, despite the new law, the local ABC board announced.

So if you want to go swing by a liquor store around Charlotte, your best bet is to do it before the weekend is over. Here’s a map of ABC locations in Mecklenburg County:

Are grocery stores open on Labor Day in Charlotte?

Several grocery and retail stores will be open Monday if you want to purchase beer or wine:

  • ALDI: Open for limited hours

  • Food Lion: Open during regular business hours

  • The Fresh Market: Open during regular business hours

  • Harris Teeter: Open during regular business hours

  • Lidl: Open during regular business hours

  • Publix: Open during regular business hours. Pharmacies will be closed.

  • Sam’s Club: Open for limited hours

  • Target: Open during regular business hours

  • Trader Joe’s: Open during regular business hours

  • Walmart: Open during regular business hours

  • Whole Foods: Most stores open with modified hours
