More than 60 people to lose jobs in the Charlotte region as manufacturing plant closes
A sports apparel manufacturer is shutting down its Cabarrus County facility due to not having enough new work orders, resulting in dozens layoffs.
Tegra Global will close its Concord plant next March 31 creating the loss of 61 jobs, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) received Tuesday by the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The facility at 244 Manor Ave. SW is about 25 miles northeast of uptown Charlotte.
The plant is closing because of supply chain disruption, inflation and reduced customer demand, L’Tanya Johnson, director of human resources, said in the notice to the state.
“The economic impact on the company is very severe and our ability to be profitable has been extremely impacted,” Johnson said.
Jobs affected range from production and quality roles to packers and operator positions.
Employees were notified Sept. 12, according to the WARN report. Layoffs will start with 37 employees on Tuesday, followed by 7 workers on Dec. 31 and 19 on March 31, Johnson said in the notice.
The Atlanta-based company was founded in 2016, according to the company’s Facebook page. The company has over 10,000 employees combined at five U.S. sites and central America, according to Tegra’s LinkedIn page.
In April, South Korea-based Sae-A Trading acquired Tegra, which makes professional, college and high school athletic apparel. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, according to a Sae-A Trading news release.
