Part of West Boulevard is closing near Charlotte airport. Here’s how to get around it
Part of one road near Charlotte Douglas International Airport will be closed in the new year.
A “small portion” of West Boulevard from Piney Top Drive to Steele Creek Road will permanently close this Friday, Jan. 3 to make way for the new taxiway, the airport said Monday in a news release.
The road will be realigned as part of the South End Around Taxiway project. The West Boulevard construction is expected to be completed in four months, the airport said.
CLT detour routes
Traffic signals will be installed for local and through traffic:
▪ Use Byrum Drive to travel between Steele Creek and Yorkmont roads.
▪ Use Shopton Road to travel between Sandy Porter and Beam roads.
▪ Use West Arrowood Road to access Sandy Porter Road and South Tryon Street from the south.
More about CLT’s runway project
The fourth parallel runway program includes the construction of the South End-Around Taxiway (Taxiway P) in preparation for the future runway 1C-19C.
The 10,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide project will run west of runway 18C/36C. It’s expected to open in 2027.
Funding for the more than $1 billion is coming from Federal Aviation Administration, bonds and passenger fees, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.
Charlotte Douglas is the seventh busiest airport in the world for arrivals and departures, according to Airports Council International. It’s a hub for American Airlines, which handles about 90% of the traffic at the airport.
The airport is in the midst of the winter holiday season and expects nearly 3 million passengers from Dec. 20 through Jan. 5, a 6% increase over last year. The airport also is expecting 25,000 flights, an 8% increase compared to last year.
