Another company is ditching Charlotte for the suburbs, and bringing over 70 jobs with it
A Charlotte-based electrical company is packing up and relocating its operations and 71 jobs to Monroe.
It’s the second company this week to ditch Charlotte for the suburbs. On Wednesday, Komar Industries said it would move a subsidiary from Charlotte to York, South Carolina, bringing 160 jobs and $11.5 million of new investment to York County.
The latest move involves Southern Electrical Equipment Company. The Monroe City Council unanimously approved an $114,000 economic development incentive grant on Tuesday for the company.
Southern Electric Equipment, which has operations in Mecklenburg County and Indian Trail, plans to consolidate into one 109,000-square-foot facility. It will be at Monroe Corporate Center in Union County, according to a news release from the city.
The move will create 71 jobs with an annual salary of $64,000 within three years.
SEECO will have a retention plan for current employees and most of them will be going to the new site, according to company and Monroe representatives.
The Monroe Corporate Center provides resources, transportation, skilled workforce and economic incentives for SEECO to thrive, the city said.
SEECO plans to invest $7 million to $10 million at the 15-acre site at 4862 Corporate Center Drive. This will come with workforce development partnerships with South Piedmont Community College, which is close to the industrial park.
SEECO owner Andrew Panto said the business is looking forward to becoming part of the community
In early March, the Union County Board of Commissioners approved a $133,000 incentive grant to be paid over a five-year period starting in the 2027 fiscal year for the development site.
Monroe’s corporate center is near the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport. The industrial park was founded in 1994 with 186 acres and later expanded to about 500 acres.
Manufacturing companies at the center employ more than 1,300 people.
