Charlotte gaining over 275 jobs as financial services company moves HQ here

The financial lending company for Daimler Truck North America is investing $7.8 million to move its headquarters to south Charlotte, which will create 276 jobs for the region, Gov. Josh Stein announced Tuesday.

Daimler Truck Financial Services USA will consolidate its current offices from Michigan and Texas into a 60,000 square-foot site in the Ballantyne area, according to a news release from the governor’s office. It will house administration, human resources and financial operations.

Daimler’s new headquarters will be in the 10-story Boyle Building at 13034 Ballantyne Corporate Place, according to N.C. Department of Commerce spokeswoman Ptrice Bethea ,citing information for a state grant incentive.

The company declined to provide additional information about the site selection.

The average annual salary for the jobs is expected to be $133,940, according to Stein’s office. This is over $47,000 more than the Mecklenburg County average of $86,830.

More than 83 Daimler financial employees will transfer from other locations, and 193 new jobs will be created locally, according to a news release from the city of Charlotte.

“This move marks a pivotal step in aligning our team closer to DTNA and advancing our strategy for long-term services growth,” Kevin Bangston, president and CEO of Daimler Truck Financial Services, said in a statement.

Incentives for the Daimler Truck Financial Services deal

The Daimler move to Charlotte was made possible, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee on Tuesday. The project is expected to add over $ 1 billion to the state’s economy over the next 12 years, based on the lifespan of the grant, according to Stein’s office.

Daimler is in line to receives incentives involving a reimbursement of more than $4.1 million through the grant in the next 12 years, based on new tax revenues generated by the new jobs and capital investment.

Based on Mecklenburg County classification as a Tier 3 area by the state’s economic ranking system, the grant also includes moving $1.3 million into the state’s Industrial Development Fund — Utility Account. The money will be spent on infrastructure projects in rural areas to attract businesses.

The Utility Account provides grants to local governments in the 80 most economically distressed counties of the state, which are either Tier 1 or Tier 2. Money is funded through the Job Development Investment Grant program. When companies like Daimler choose to locate or expand in a Tier 2 or Tier 3 county, a portion of that JDIG award is sent to the Utility Account.
