Camp North End vinyl shop spins its way to a second location in South End
Coming this fall, South End music fans will have a new vinyl shop in the area. Hardy Boys Records and Comics announced on Tuesday the opening of its second independent location.
The shop at 1616 Camden Road will sell an expansive collection of new and used vinyl records spanning all genres, in addition to used comics, cassette tapes, CDs, band t-shirts and Hardy Boys merchandise.
“We’ve always wanted to have a Hardy Boys Records right here in South End,” said Dean Hardy, owner of Hardy Boys Records. “It’s such a great neighborhood, and we’re excited to create a spot where people can hang out, dig through records and just enjoy good music together.”
Hardy and his wife Tiffany founded the business in 2018.
They started with a yard sale sign that read “I buy records” which grew into selling items through Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. From there, they hosted garage sales and pop-up events before the business moved into Homestyles boutique in Mint Hill. A second shop later opened inside The Brass Grasshopper Matthews.
They opened their first independent location in 2023 at Camp North End.
The business has grown into a full family affair with their sons Caspian and Thaddeus joining in on the day-to-day operations. Hardy said they are excited to move their business into a new community and target a different group of music lovers.
They hope to expand their stores within another year into the Ballantyne area of Charlotte.
Hardy said the younger generations’ drive to support their favorite artists has driven record sales. He also cited the emotional connection to the artist as a leading force in record sales.
“It’s way more intentional,” said Hardy. “You can read the lyrics, look at pictures, that sort of thing is the connection to the audience.”
The shop’s new space will carry an urban vibe and will include a “spin station” complete with a turntable and lounge seating seeking to invite guests to enjoy the vinyls. Customers are also welcome to bring in their own records, CDs and tapes for appraisal if they’re looking to sell them for cash or store credit.
They are also hoping to do events at the new location where customers can come together and listen to new records.
“We’re trying to build a community where you can come in and talk to either the person or our team member or the other people in the shop about music,” Hardy said.
