About 170 new jobs will be created throughout four counties surrounding Mecklenburg, thanks to several grants from the state’s Rural Infrastructure Authority.

Alexander, Anson, Burke and Gaston counties were each award grants fueling job creation and $74.5 million in private investment, Gov. Josh Stein’s office announced on Thursday.

The grants, totaling close to $1.9 million, were from the state’s Rural Infrastructure Authority, which receives and approves funding requests from rural communities. The authority is run by the rural economic development team at the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Stein stated that investing in rural communities benefits the state’s economy. The grants will also lead to economic growth and opportunity in the state’s smaller towns, he said.

Reusing old buildings and new infrastructure

The grants fell under two programs: the Building Reuse Program and the Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account Program.

Here’s a breakdown of the awards:

Alexander County was awarded $175,000 to reuse a vacant hospital in Taylorsville, which is about 64 miles northwest of Charlotte.

Urgent Care of Mountain View, LLC will relocate to the almost 16,000-square-foot, two-story facility to expand its services. The provider offers routine services and accepts walk-ins. The move will create 14 jobs and lead to over $551,000 in private investment.

Anson County received $500,000 to help Halal Meat Slaughter House relocate to a bigger facility in Ansonville. The family-owned meat processing company will hire 61 employees, investing close to $4.5 million in the county.

Gaston County will also be receiving $500,000 to help Healsee Capsules establish its second location in the U.S. The company is a global manufacturer of cellulose ethers and plant-based empty capsules. It’ll reuse a building in Bessemer City, creating 95 jobs with a $69.5 million investment.

And Burke County was granted over $697,000, which will help the county build more than 2,500 feet of natural gas pipeline under the Burke Business Park.
