What’s more, all three new stores are within a mile of each other, just off U.S. 521.
Lancaster County announced temporary traffic changes this summer in anticipation of the stores opening, and will put a 1% sales tax proposal on the Nov. 4 to fund road upgrades with a heavy focus on U.S. 521, or Charlotte Highway.
Here’s the latest on opening plans for Lowes Foods, Target and Costco:
Lowes Foods to open at The Exchange
Lowes Foods will open its grocery store at U.S. 521 and Possum Hollow Road on Oct. 9, in the new retail development called The Exchange. Doors open at 8 a.m.
The Lowes Foods store will have a coffee shop, cheese shop and bakery along with typical groceries. The deli has eat-in or take-home meals in three themed areas, one each for chicken, smoked meats and sandwiches.
An area called The Community Table will host food pairings, tea parties, floral arrangement classes and private events. The Beer Den lets customers have a drink while they shop, or fill growlers or crowlers to take home. There’s also a SausageWorks station using locally sourced meats.
Lowes Foods will have online shopping through Lowes Foods to Go.
The opening of Lowes Foods sets the stage for more additions in the $400 million Exchange project. The site off Charlotte Highway is approved for more than 700 townhomes and apartments.
Developer Crosland Southeast asked Lancaster County to allow more retail space there this spring to make way for a Medical University of South Carolina office, restaurant, coffee, bank, dentist office and retail development.

The store will employ about 170 people. The company’s starting wages range from $15 to $24 an hour. It’ll have a CVS pharmacy, Disney store and Starbucks. The Target also will have drive-up pickup, same-day delivery or next-day delivery throughout Indian Land.

This Target will be just the second one in the Rock Hill region, after one in Rock Hill at Manchester Village. The Charlotte area has eight stores, including nearby locations in Pineville, Stonecrest and Steele Creek.
Costco to open new warehouse store
The last big opening of October also brings the store that’s newest to the area. Costco will open its Indian Land warehouse store on Oct. 30.
There are two Charlotte-area Costco sites. There’s one off Tyvola Road in Charlotte, and another in Matthews, North Carolina. The Rock Hill region doesn’t have any.
