Charlotte to the Middle East: Etihad shifts launch date for new nonstop flight
Etihad Airways’ new nonstop flight between Charlotte and Abu Dhabi is coming sooner than expected for passengers excited about going between the Queen City and the popular Middle Eastern city.
Service between Zayed International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport was scheduled to begin May 6, 2026, but those flights were pushed up to March 23, according to a CLT X post on Monday. The route to the Middle East destination from North Carolina is a first for the airline based in the United Arab Emirates.
Etihad announced plans for the new route in mid-May, with service starting a year later.
But in response to strong demand and growing interest in the new route, the airline moved up the launch to better serve customers, according to a statement it sent to The Charlotte Observer.
“This new route will provide seamless access to destinations across the Middle East, Asia and the Indian subcontinent,” Etihad stated. “We look forward to joining the Charlotte community and connecting more travelers to our global network.”
In an exclusive interview last month, Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves told The Charlotte Observer that said Charlotte is part of the airline’s long-term network strategy. Despite its rapidly expanding population and booming economy, Charlotte has not had a nonstop link to the Middle East— something Etihad considered a major opportunity, Neves added.
“As we’ve expanded our U.S. presence, CLT consistently stood out as a key market to support both business and leisure demand to and from Abu Dhabi, and beyond,” he said.
About the CLT to UAE connection
Flights are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Departures from Abu Dhabi will be in the early morning, with return flights scheduled for midday, according to Etihad.
The flight between Charlotte and Abu Dhabi is about 14 hours.
Passengers on the Charlotte-Abu Dhabi route will be travelling in a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner — the first of its kind at Charlotte’s airport. This 300-seat flagship aircraft from Etihad features spacious business and economy cabins, larger windows and quieter interiors.
The Dreamliner is also about 25% more fuel-efficient than previous models, thanks to lighter materials and new engines.
Tickets are now available at etihad.com. Roundtrip fares to Abu Dhabi started at about $850 for basic economy, while some business class tickets can run as high as $9,000 or more.
Etihad collaborates with several airlines, including American Airlines, which operates roughly 90% of flights from CLT. Etihad’s website also lists JetBlue, Air Canada, and Air France as additional partners.
