With SNAP delays pending, Bank of America pledges $250M to fight hunger in the US
Charlotte-based Bank of America is donating $250 million to support families and individuals struggling with food shortages and other basic needs, the bank announced Friday morning.
Bank of America made its commitment following warnings from state officials earlier this week that the ongoing federal government shutdown could delay November SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits for 1.4 million people in North Carolina. This delay may lead to increased demand at local food banks.
More than 143,000 people in Mecklenburg County and 83,000 in Wake County could be impacted by the delay, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.
Bank of America said its funding will be distributed nationwide over the next five years, with $5 million going toward immediate assistance for about 100 nonprofits, the bank stated. This funding will help ensure that organizations can address needs at the local level.
A total of $290,000 of the $5 million will be allocated to North Carolina, according to the bank.
Bank of America is distributing $75,000 each to Second Harvest Food Bank and Nourish Up in Charlotte, and another $50,000 to organizations in the Raleigh area. Food banks in Asheville, the Wilmington area, and the Triad region will each receive $30,000.
“Our ongoing commitment to the needs of the local communities where we work and live is foundational to who we are at Bank of America,” said Sheri Bronstein, chief people officer at Bank of America. “We work closely with food banks, food pantries and other basic-needs-focused organizations every day, and this new commitment builds on decades of giving, volunteering and partnership.”
The bank’s investment builds on the company’s long-standing support for feeding people and provides funding to more than 1,200 organizations focused on hunger and related needs.
In addition to the $250 million donation, bank employees will volunteer more than 100,000 hours by the end of the year to help organizations with hunger relief and other services. Bank of America is also matching employee contributions to these organizations.
