Charlotte region lands another 700 jobs. Athletic sportswear company to open soon
An athletic sportswear brand is opening a fulfillment facility in Kannapolis, bringing in 700 jobs, the city announced Thursday afternoon.
Momentec Brands, an athletic-wear parent-company that makes training apparel, headwear and jerseys, will centralize its operations at a 756,000-square-foot site in Kannapolis, according to a city news release.
This is the second major jobs announcement the Charlotte area has seen in as many days. On Wednesday, Scout Motors said it was relocating its headquarters from Virginia to the Plaza Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte, investing $207 million and bringing in 1,200 high-paying jobs.
The Kannapolis facility, called a “Customer Success Center,” will have robotic tools and staff to pick orders for all of Momentec’s brands: Alleson Athletic, Augusta Sportswear, Badger, C2, Holloway, High Five and Russell Athletic.
It’ll be the first time all the brands will be in one place, which Momentec hopes will streamline orders and shipments. The facility will also have apparel decoration capabilities and uniform kits, which can be sent to players’ homes.
The facility should be operational by the beginning of next year. And once complete, it’ll bring in 700 jobs. The company is going in the Metro 63 building off Exit 63 of Interstate 85.
Having an athletic wear brand is Kannapolis is on brand and ideal, Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant suggested.
“As the home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (minor league baseball team) and many local sports teams we are familiar with their products. We welcome their significant investment in our community,” Hinnant said in the release.
About Momentec Brands
The company was formed in March 2024 through a merger of Augusta Sportswear Brands and Founder Sport Group. Investment firm Platinum Equity acquired both brands and merged them.
Some of the brands under Momentec’s belt include Russell Athletic which was started in 1902, according to its website.
Badger Sportswear, also under the Momentec brand, was founded in Statesville in 1971.
With Momentec combining all of its brands under one roof, several facilities in the last month have closed, leading to layoffs.
Momentec will shutter its distribution center in Sidney, Ohio, by Jan. 30, impacting 58 workers, WHIO-TV reported. With the merger of Augusta Sportswear, 93 workers are expected to be laid off when the Georgia facility is closed by Dec. 19, The Augusta Chronicle reported.
